If your dentures fit properly, your top ones should suction smoothly to your gums and your bottom ones should float above your gums while still easily staying in your mouth. If you have partial dentures, they shouldn’t move significantly and should stay in line with your natural teeth. Though wearing dentures that don’t fit properly can be uncomfortable, they can also cause a variety of oral health issues. Read on to learn about five oral health problems that can be caused by ill-fitting dentures and what your dentist can do to help.

#1: Trouble Speaking

Ill-fitting dentures are highly unstable. This makes it difficult for those who wear them to speak comfortably and normally. They may also fall out while speaking. In some cases, slipping dentures can even cause people to develop a lisp.

#2: Swollen Gums and Blisters

When your dentures don’t properly fit with the contours of your mouth, this will cause them to rub against the gums abnormally. The extra pressure and friction that this creates can cause the gums to swell and blisters to form on them. Swollen gums are more susceptible to injury. Additionally, if the blisters burst, this gives bacteria access to the gums and increases your chances of getting an infection like gum disease.

#3: Trouble Eating

When dentures don’t fit properly, this can make it hard or even painful to eat. Food may also get stuck between your dentures and gum, which gives oral bacteria plenty to feed on and can ultimately lead to cavities or gum disease.

#4: Angular Cheilitis

Ill-fitting dentures can lead to an uneven bite, which can cause saliva to pool at the corners of the mouth. This may cause yeast overgrowth and lead to a bacterial infection called angular cheilitis. Symptoms of this infection include dry lips, a burning sensation, and sores in the corners of the mouth.

#5: Damage to Natural Teeth

Slipping partial dentures can grate against your natural teeth. This can lead to thinner enamel, chips, or cracks, all of which make your teeth more susceptible to decay.

What Your Dentist Can Do

Luckily, your dentist can examine your dentures to determine why they don’t fit properly. They may decide to replace the lining of your dentures to make them better fit the contours of your mouth. Additionally, they might place a new resin base so your dentures fit more snuggly against your gum tissue. You may also want to ask your dentist about switching to implant dentures for better stability

If your dentures don’t fit properly, make sure to visit your dentist as soon as possible. They will be able to determine the cause and make your dentures fit properly so you can get back to laughing, talking, smiling, and eating in comfort!
