A Modern Treatment for Tooth Loss

Dental implants are a modern development, the result of an accidental discovery in the 1950s. In 1965, the first successful dental implants were placed. They have undergone many significant improvements over the years and have quickly become the most popular treatment for missing teeth. Dental implants use small titanium posts, which are surgically implanted into your jawbone, to support your replacement teeth. As you heal, the bone fuses to the posts, integrating them into the jaw, turning the posts into strong, stable supports.

Versatility to Meet a Variety of Needs

Dental implants are a highly versatile, highly customizable treatment that can be used to meet some different needs. There are several different types of dental implants:
•  Single tooth. This treatment uses a single post to support a single crown and is used to replace individual teeth.
•  Multiple teeth. When you are missing multiple consecutive teeth, a multiple tooth implant, or implant supported bridge, may be used. One or more posts supports two or more teeth.
•  Full arch replacement. An implant supported denture may be used when you are missing an entire arch of teeth. This restoration uses 6 to 8 posts to support your new teeth.
•  All-on-4® Treatment Concept. If your jawbone does not produce enough bone mass to support 6 to 8 posts for an implant supported a denture, you may be eligible for the All-on-4® Treatment Concept. This treatment uses only four posts to support an entire arch of teeth.

Getting Your Dental Implants

Unlike traditional treatments for tooth loss, dental implants require a surgical procedure. This procedure is typically done under a local anesthetic and sedation. The surgery begins with small incisions in your gums. We then drill holes into your exposed jawbone and insert the posts inside. Your gums are then sutured closed, leaving a small portion of the posts exposed above the gum line.

Temporary teeth are set in place while you heal. Depending on your situation, it can take several weeks to several months to fully heal. During this time, your jawbone gradually fuses to the posts, stabilizing them in place. After you have healed from surgery, we then begin the process of creating your final restorations. Creating your final teeth typically takes two appointments. During your first appointment, the temporary teeth are removed and abutments, or connectors, are placed on the posts. Next, impressions are taken and sent to a dental lab. It can take up to two weeks for the teeth to be completed. At your second appointment, the teeth are screwed into place on your implants.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide several benefits:
•  They look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth.
•  Your digestion, and nutrition, are improved.
•  They are much more comfortable. Your crowns are supported by the posts rather than on your gums.
•  They are easy to take care of. They can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
•  You regain your confidence.
•  The posts stimulate your jawbone like the roots of your natural teeth, aiding in stopping, and preventing, bone loss in the jaw.

Replacing missing teeth, whether it is just one or you have lost many, is essential for restoring your oral health, your smile, the functions of your mouth, and your quality of life.
