Porcelain Veneers
Evanston, IL

At Winning Smile Dental Group, we want our patients to be happy with their smile, which is why we offer porcelain veneers. Porcelain veneers are a cosmetic and restorative solution designed to change the color, shape, size, or length of your anterior (front) teeth. Each veneer is a wafer-thin, custom-designed shell that covers the front surface of your tooth. Porcelain veneers are a quick and easy way to a more beautiful smile; however, treatment is irreversible. Before you decide if veneers are right for you, we recommend extensive research on the process, the advantages, and proper maintenance.

The Porcelain Veneer Process

During a consultation visit, Dr. Polly Reese will perform a physical exam, and make records of your teeth, gum tissue, and overall facial bone structure. This may include impressions, x-rays, digital 3D CTBT scans, and photographs. We will use this information to create a model of your mouth, and a mock-up of your new teeth. This stage of the process involves your active participation. You should vocalize and explain your desired results, questions, and concerns. Depending on your circumstance, treatment may range from one veneer to a series of veneers. Once we have developed a precise treatment plan, we can continue with the procedure.

During your next appointment, Dr. Polly Reese will prepare your teeth. A small portion of each tooth will be shaved off to accommodate the thickness of the veneer. Local anesthetic is not usually required when reshaping such a small area of enamel. If you have sensitivity issues, local anesthetic may be necessary. After your teeth are prepared, we will take an impression and send it to our laboratory. There, they will use the impression as a model to fabricate your veneers.

After the lab has delivered the porcelain veneers to Dr. Polly Reese, your teeth will be cleaned. Then, the back of each veneer will be etched and cleaned. Finally, an adhesive will be placed on each veneer, which in turn is placed on your teeth. Once we have achieved the proper fit, the veneer will be light cured for 60 seconds. This will create a permanent bond strong enough to support the pressures of your bite. Before you leave the office, any excess material will be removed, and your veneers will be polished.

The Advantages of Porcelain Veneers

Veneers offer some advantages, including:
•  Aesthetically pleasing: Veneers provide an exceptional and natural tooth appearance.
•  Stain resistant: Porcelain is resistant to stains caused by coffee, tea, wine, and dark fruits and vegetables.
•  Conservative: Many patients choose veneers because they are a conservative alternative to dental crowns. They achieve the same effect without a completely reshaping your enamel.
•  Corrective: Veneers are used to correct minor cosmetic and structural issues, including teeth that are worn down, chipped or broken, misaligned, irregularly shaped, uneven, or gapped.

Caring for Porcelain Veneers

Before you leave the office, Dr. Polly Reese will give you a detailed set of care instructions. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), suggest brushing and flossing as you would your natural teeth. Keep in mind that veneers are made of porcelain and may need to be replaced at some point. To increase their longevity, be sure to avoid habits that put unnecessary stain or force on your veneers.
