Dental Sealants
Evanston, IL

At Winning Smile Dental Group, we pride ourselves on treating every member of the family, especially children. We want to ensure your child has a beautiful smile, pristine oral health, and a strong foundation that will follow them into adulthood. For this reason, we may recommend dental sealants for individuals who are especially prone to tooth decay, such as teenagers and younger children. Dental sealants are an excellent way to protect your child’s teeth from harmful bacteria and dental caries.

The Importance of Preventive Care

Dental caries, also referred to as tooth decay or cavities, are the most widespread oral disease, but also the most preventable. When you eat certain foods, especially those high in sugar and starch, the bacteria in your mouth produce acids that can seriously damage your tooth enamel. The result is dental caries.

Preventing dental caries is a crucial part of pediatric dental care. Winning Smile Dental Group provides pediatric services like sealants so children can avoid oral diseases and maintain a beautiful smile. Poor oral health has also been linked to systematic illnesses that affect overall health. Excellent dental hygiene can also help prevent future complications that may have more serious consequences.

What Are Dental Sealants?

Sealants are designed to fill the deep pits and grooves of your molars, which can be particularly susceptible to dental caries because they trap food debris and bacteria. These grooves can be difficult to clean, and in some cases, can even be narrower than the bristle of a toothbrush. Children have a particularly difficult time keeping the molars clean. A dental sealant can change that.

During the procedure, the surface of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned with a special paste. Next, the tooth is washed with water and dried. Then, Dr. Polly Reese will place an acidic solution onto the fissured space to create microscopic areas with a slightly rougher surface than the rest of the tooth. The rougher surface will enable the sealant to properly adhere to the tooth in crucial spots. Once the tooth is properly prepared, Dr. Polly Reese will apply the liquid dental sealant and harden it using a curing light. Once hard, the sealant acts like a plastic varnish coating that protects the tooth and seals out bacteria. If your child is nervous about the procedure, reassure them that the process is effectively painless and only takes a few minutes.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

Dental sealants have been proven to last for many years. Since the 1970s, studies have shown that sealants successfully prevent decay on the chewing surfaces of the tooth. Once a sealant has been applied, it can last up to 10 years with the proper care. If necessary, Dr. Polly Reese can even replace the sealant once it has worn away. Regardless, we suggest avoiding behavior that may put unnecessary stress on the sealant.

During a routine exam or cleaning, Dr. Polly Reese will be able to monitor the sealant. Keep in mind that sealants are not a substitute for regular oral hygiene. Be sure your child is brushing and flossing their teeth daily, especially if they are prone to cavities.
