Tooth extractions are a normal part of dentistry. Teeth are extracted for a variety of reasons, including being impacted, decayed, or to improve a patient’s bite. At Winning Smile Dental Group, one of our oral surgeons can evaluate your situation and plan the right kind of extraction needed to improve the health of your mouth. We perform both simple and surgical extractions, with either local or general anesthesia, based on your needs.

Extracted teeth are teeth that are completely pulled from their socket; there is no portion, or root remaining. If the patient is seeking restoration, there are steps that we can take to make the process easier, including placing a bone graft to keep the bone healthy. Healthy bone is needed to keep the neighboring bone strong, and for the placement of a tooth implant. In some situations, the patient may have prearranged to have an implant placed immediately the following extraction.

Why are teeth extracted?

There are many reasons a tooth may need to be extracted including for the patient's health, because of injury, or to improve their function. We can help you determine if extraction is needed for your situation. Some of the most common reasons teeth are extracted include:

•  The tooth is severely decayed.
•  The patient is suffering from chronic periodontal disease and has lost significant bone.
•  The tooth has been fractured or broken in such a way that it is impractical to repair with a dental crown.
•  The tooth is impacted
•  The tooth is poorly positioned.
•  The tooth is non-functional and requires replacement with a dental prosthesis such as a dental bridge.
•  The tooth is an extra tooth causing malocclusion.
•  An orthodontist would like to improve the patient's occlusion and finds the removal of a tooth necessary.

Simple and Surgical Extractions

A simple extraction is done with an elevator tool and forceps. Simple refers to the ability to cleanly lift the tooth out of the socket without breakage. A simple extraction can easily turn into a surgical extraction.

A surgical extraction means that it was necessary to make cuts into the tissue to remove the tooth. This is necessary when the tooth has fractured below the gum line, or has fractured in such a way that we can not get a solid grasp on the portion remaining, or if the tooth is impacted. Surgical extractions can be uncomfortable for the patient, and may require one to two days longer in recovering.

Tooth extractions are a common procedure performed in our office. Typically tooth extractions can be performed using local anesthesia. For patients who have complex cases, IV anesthesia/sedation can be used.

All patients are given home care instructions following their extraction. In most situations, over the counter pain relief is all that is necessary, though in certain cases, we may prescribe stronger pain relief. We will want the patient to be aware of the amount of bleeding that occurs after their extraction and pay special attention to anything that seems out of the ordinary. We will provide you with information on how to reduce swelling and inflammation.
