White Fillings
Evanston, IL

White fillings, also called tooth-colored fillings, are dental fillings that are used to restore the natural appearance of a tooth, as well as its structure. At Winning Smile Dental Group, we offer composite resin fillings as an aesthetically-pleasing alternative to other restorative materials, like amalgam or gold.

What Is Resin Composite?

Resin Composite is a material made from a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture. Composite resin can be used to restore decayed teeth, as well as discolored or misshaped teeth. Composite fillings provide good durability and resistance to fracture for small to moderately-sized fillings. Dr. Polly Reese may recommend composite resin for cavities in either the front or back teeth, as they are a good choice for patients who want a more natural-looking restoration.

Composite resin may not always be the ideal choice. For areas of the mouth that need to withstand a strong bite force, Dr. Polly Reese may recommend amalgam fillings. Composite resin is most suitable for fillings that need to withstand moderate pressure from the constant stress of chewing.

It is important to remember that preventive dentistry is the best dentistry. You can dramatically decrease your risk of cavities with proper brushing, flossing, and a balanced diet. Regular checkups and professional cleanings are also an integral part of your oral health. When a need for a filling does arise, Winning Smile Dental Group is here to help.

The Filling Procedure

The procedure for a composite resin filling is relatively simple and usually completed in one appointment. First, Dr. Polly Reese will determine whether or not a dental filling is necessary. This may involve a comprehensive exam, x-rays, and other diagnostic tools.

Once we have determined that composite resin is the best option, we will prepare the tooth. Dr. Polly Reese will select an appropriate shade of composite that best matches your natural tooth. After removing the decayed tooth material and cleaning the area, Dr. Polly Reese will then the place the composite resin in a series of layers. Each layer is hardened using a special curing light. Once the cavity is filled, we will trim any excess and apply polish. This will help it remain smooth and resist certain stains. We still recommend you avoid certain foods and drinks that are known to cause stainings, such as teas, coffees, and wine.

Composite resin fillings take longer to place than an amalgam filling. That is because the tooth must be kept clean and dry due to the bonding process.

Advantages of White Fillings

White fillings have several advantages over their silver counterparts, some of which include:
•  Composite resin is an aesthetically-pleasing material that can be color-matched to your natural tooth.
•  Composite resin chemically bonds to the tooth structure, making them strong and resistant to wear.
•  Composite resin hardens in seconds, instead of other restorative material that may take days.
•  Composite resin can be used for teeth in the front and back without compromising aesthetics.
•  Composite resin is easy to repair.
•  Composite resin does not produce the same sensitivity issues as amalgam fillings.
