Emergency Dentistry
Evanston, IL

Emergencies can be scary. Dental emergencies are no different. When issues arise, it is easy to panic. The first instinct is often to head to the local emergency room. While scary, many dental emergencies do not require hospital care. Most dental emergencies can be treated right in the office. There are even some that can easily be treated at home. At Winning Smile Dental Group, we can help you determine what the best course of action is.

Handling Emergencies at Home

While experiencing a dental emergency an be frightening, there are actually many that can be taken care of right in your own home. One such type of injury is bites to the lip, tongue, or cheeks. They can be painful, but they are not often dangerous. If you are experiencing pain and swelling, over the counter pain relievers or an ice pack can be used. If you are bleeding, place a damp piece of gauze over the wound and apply gentle pressure. If the bleeding is excessive, or persists longer than 15 minutes, then you should seek medical attention.

Some toothaches can also be handled at home as well. While toothaches are often a sign of an infection, they can also be caused by food lodged between your teeth. If you are experiencing a toothache, thoroughly brush and floss your teeth, and rinse with salt water. If nothing comes out, or you are experiencing other symptoms of an infection, call our office immediately.

Emergency Dentistry in Our Office

We can treat a wide variety of different dental emergencies in our office. Emergencies we treat include:
•  Toothaches. Toothaches are a common sign of an infection, which we can treat with a root canal.
•  Damage to your teeth. This includes cracks, chips that can be the result of a facial injury or just biting down on something too hard. Minor damage that only affects the outer layer of your teeth is not usually harmful to your oral health but can be restored with cosmetic dentistry. For more severe damage, we can assess the extent of the damage and determine if a crown can be placed or if the tooth needs to be extracted.
•  Displaced teeth. We can set teeth that have been partially knocked out or partially dislodged back into their sockets and secure them with a splint while they heal. Do not attempt to reset your teeth yourself.
•  Teeth that have been knocked out. If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, it may be possible to set it back into the socket. First, find the tooth. Pick it up and run it under cool water, handling it only by the crown. Do not touch the root. Store the tooth in a glass of milk or salt water until your appointment. We will then set the tooth back in the socket and use a splint to help secure the tooth while you heal. If we cannot reset the tooth, we will then discuss your options for tooth replacement.

Going to the ER

There are some situations in which it is best to head straight to the emergency room for medical care. These situations include:
•  Trouble breathing.
•  Excessive bleeding, or bleeding that does not stop after 15 minutes.
•  Extreme pain or swelling.
•  You think that your jaw might be broken.

When a dental emergency happens, it is important to remain calm. If you have any questions or concerns, or are unsure of where to go in the event of a dental emergency, call Winning Smile Dental Group today at (224) 307-4977.
