So, you got your first pair of dentures from your dentist. That’s great news! Such prosthetics will restore your smile and improve your self-esteem as your tooth gaps are filled. Still, there’s a chance your new teeth will need a special cream to stay in place. Furthermore, using denture adhesive can get tricky, so it pays to know how best to apply and remove it. Luckily enough, your Evanston dentist can give you some pointers. Here’s a summary of the signs you need denture cream, including how to apply the adhesive and later remove it.

Signs You Should Use Denture Adhesive

Not all dentures need cream to stay secure and steady. However, an adhesive would be ideal for denture patients who:

  • Want More Confidence: Because denture adhesive increases the prosthetic’s strength and hold, it could help you feel more confident in social situations.
  • Have Issues with Dry Mouth: If you’re older or on certain medications, you may suffer from dry mouth. Fortunately, denture adhesive corrects adhesion problems stemming from this dryness.
  • Often Strain Their Face: An adhesive could be helpful for those who often put a strain on their face. Such people might include singers, teachers, athletes, or anyone who finds themselves speaking a lot.

How to Apply Denture Adhesive

It doesn’t take too much to apply denture cream properly. After ensuring your dentures are clean, you can go ahead and get started.

First is the actual application of the adhesive. In most cases, just perform this step by following the instructions on the cream’s packaging. If no directions are available, though, apply the cream in short strips that aren’t too close to the edges. That way, you can prevent oozing.

Once done with the cream, position your dentures and hold them in place for a few seconds. From there, the prosthetics will have a secure hold.

How to Remove Denture Adhesive

When removing the adhesive, you need to loosen it first. Therefore, gargle with salt water for 30 seconds, spit it out, then rinse and repeat a few times. After doing so, much of the cream will have washed from between your dentures and gums.

Following the rinse, the next step is to remove the dentures themselves. Using a back-and-forth motion, loosen and release the top and bottom ones in succession. Once the dentures are out of your mouth, you can rinse them with lukewarm water and brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush. From there, soak the dentures in a proper cleaning solution.

Using denture adhesive isn’t as simple as it may seem. Given that fact, then, follow the tips above to get the most out of your restorations!
